Halima Ismail Ibrahim, the Chairlady of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) is scheduled to address the federal parliament tomorrow, June 27.
NIEC’s D-Day with parliament is a highly anticipated event in Somalia, which is set to hold elections in late 2020 and early 2021.
The 2020 elections are for parliamentary seats while the polls set for 2021 are to elect the country’s new president.
President Mohamed Farmaajo is expected to be one of the candidates for the presidency.
However, opposition parties in the country have continuously accused Farmaajo of seeking to extend his term in office by delaying the upcoming elections.
In the meeting with parliament tomorrow, the NIEC Chairlady is expected to pledge whether the country is ready to hold elections on time or ask for more time to prepare.
