Staff from the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) held a meeting with representatives of civil society organizations in Somalia.
The meeting’s agenda was to discuss the role that civil society organizations can play in the upcoming polls in the country.
Ms. Halima Ismail Ibrahim, the Chairperson of the NIEC, addressed the meeting.
In her speech, she updated the civil society organizations on the efforts NIEC has put in to ensure that Somalia holds elections on time.
She also reassured the organizations of NIEC’s commitment to guiding Somalis away from clan-based polls to universal suffrage through a democracy built on multi-party system.
On their part, the representatives who spoke on behalf of civil society organizations highlighted the incredible work that NIEC is doing.
Further, they urged NIEC to collaborate with them to ensure that all Somalis get timely updates on election plans.
Their representatives also requested the Commission to incorporate the organizations in providing voters with civic education.
