The Mayor of Mogadishu, Omar Filish, has claimed that the country has underreported the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths.
According to him, the number is much higher than reported. Mayor Filish made these claims in Mogadishu on Thursday.
He said, “Many of those who died from COVID-19 are yet to be buried. Personally, I know many people who are infected by the disease.”
Mayor Filish has asked the public to be extra vigilant and continue adhering to the preventive measures that the government has put in place to curb the spread of the pandemic in Somalia.
The mayor said he knows several people who have never traveled abroad but have displayed symptoms of COVID-19.
Filish disputed the government’s assessment that one person has succumbed to the disease. He says the number of officially confirmed cases is higher than the 12 the government reported.
