NUSOJ Blasts Federal Parliament over Plans to Censor Journalists

The Federal Parliament, popularly known as the House of the People, has come under increasing scrutiny and pressure over its plans to censor journalists.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemned reports that the House of the People asked journalists to delete footage of Monday’s parliamentary sitting.

Journalists had covered parliamentary deliberations on the increasing incidences of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Speaker Mohamed Mursal and Deputy Speaker Abdiweli Ibrahim Mudey were caught on camera making what NUSOJ terms “misogynistic views.”

NUSOJ believes that the request by the top leadership of the Federal Parliament to demand the erasure of the footage shows they are aware that their views contravened the constitution.

The organization said that the public has every right to know what their leaders say in the House of the People.
