United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that more than 1.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Somalia require immediate assistance.
OCHA made this statement on February 18.
In its statement, OCHA said that 1.3 million people were displaced from their homes around the country in 2020.
Consequently, this pushed the number of IDPs in Somalia to 2.9 million.
In OCHA’s estimations, 1.6 million of the 2.9 million IDPs in the East African nation are “most vulnerable.”
Without any immediate humanitarian assistance in 2021, the lives of this most vulnerable group could be in great jeopardy.
The organization urged Somalia’s humanitarian partners to step in fast to reduce the possible loss of life for 3.1 million “most vulnerable” IDPs.
More than 1 million children aged less than 5 years are in this group too.
Some of the interventions that OCHA called for include reducing prevalence of hunger and eliminating acute malnutrition.
Others include dealing with health threats and disease outbreaks while tackling domestic abuse and violence.
