Officials from Agriculture Ministry Inspect Locust Spraying Exercise in Biyo-Shiinaha

Officials from Somaliland’s Ministry of Agriculture have visited Biyo-Shiinaha to inspect the locust-spraying exercise, which has already taken off.

Biyo-Shinaaha, a settlement that is on the north of Hargeisa, has been selected as the location for launching the spraying exercise to get rid of locusts in the region.

Locusts invaded the Horn of Africa region towards the end of 2019. Since then, they have left a ton of devastation and caused untold losses to farmers in the region.

Dr. Ahmed Ali Mah, the Director General at the Ministry of Agriculture, promised that well-trained staffers would be in charge of the exercise.

Thus far, Dr. Mah says the officers are performing the work from six vehicles equipped with sprayers donated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

On his part, Ahmed Mumin Seed, the Minister of Agriculture, says the exercise in Biyo-Shiinaha is the first in a series that the government has ordered to eradicate locusts from the country.

The minister has expressed his hope that the exercise would prove to be a huge success thus protecting the people of Somaliland from food shortages.
