Opposition Candidates Ask for More Time to Resolve Impediments to Implementation of Somalia’s Pre-Elections Agreement

The Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union (CPCU) issued a press release urging authorities for more time to remove impediments to the full implementation of the elections agreement.

CPCU issued a press statement dated February 1 requesting for more time to solve the ongoing elections crisis.

The council said that several issues have prevented the full implementation of the agreement signed on September 17, 2020.

According to the council, more time is needed to identify and appoint a third party to mediate between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS).

Additionally, the third party would also play a crucial role in ensuring that the opposition’s views are also taken into the equation.

As per the council’s statement, the third party would also protect the integrity of any new agreement reached from the national conference that kicked off in Dhusamareb.

The National FGS-FMS Conference is currently going on in the Galmudug capital to solve the debilitating elections impasse.

CPCU welcomed the decision to hold the conference reiterating its belief that Somalia’s elections-related problems could only be solved through dialogue.
