Opposition Leader Urges Government to Release Former Al-Shabaab Leader

The leader of opposition Wadajir Party has called on the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to release a former leader of Al-Shabaab.

Abdirahman Abdishakur, Wadajir Party’s leader and presidential candidate in next month’s elections, called for the release of Mukhtar Robow.

Mukhtar Robow once served as Al-Shabaab’s Deputy Leader.

He was also the militia group’s spokesperson before surrendering to the government in 2017.

According to Abdishakur, Robow could help the government carry out a successful fight against Al-Shabaab insurgency around the country.

Abdishakur published his thoughts on Robow’s arrest and continued detention on his Facebook page.

Furthermore, the Wadajir Party leader said that Robow’s release could be central to the efforts by security agencies to eradicate the presence of Al-Shabaab in Bakool region.

The opposition leader said that nobody else knows Al-Shabaab tactics better than Robow.
