Opposition Leaders Back Stronger Federalism and Power Sharing in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia – Prominent Somali opposition figures have vowed to reinforce the country’s federal system, ensure equitable power sharing, and uphold the parliamentary system as a foundation for inclusive governance.

In a joint statement issued over the weekend, the leaders emphasized the need for a broad national consensus on state-building efforts, stressing that federalism remains vital to Somalia’s stability and unity.

“We are committed to a political system built on genuine federalism, balanced power sharing, and an effective parliamentary structure. Somalia’s future must be guided by inclusive dialogue and consensus among all stakeholders,” the statement read.

The declaration comes amid growing political debate over governance models and state authority, particularly following recent tensions between the federal government and some regional states.

Analysts say the opposition’s unified stance could strengthen calls for a renewed national dialogue on constitutional reform and institutional checks and balances.
