Opposition Leaders in Somalia Reject New Elections Roadmap

Opposition leaders in Somalia have rejected the new elections roadmap that the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) released.

On Monday, August 23, the Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC) met and released a statement rejecting the roadmap agreed upon during the recent National Consultative Forum.

Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble chaired the two-day National Consultative Forum that featured representatives from FGS and Federal Member States (FMS).

In their view, the opposition presidential candidates now believe that the new roadmap gives the five FMS leaders too much power.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, an opposition presidential candidate, said that the regional state leaders have too much power in choosing the electoral delegates who will elect new Members of Parliament (MPs).

Ex-President Mohamud led his colleagues in calling for a “clearer timetable.”

He said that the country doesn’t need to delay parliamentary and presidential elections again. Somalia has postponed these elections twice before.

Stakeholders have called for urgent dialogue to resolve these issues before the situation gets worse.
