Opposition Politician Accuses Qatar of Interfering in Somalia’s Internal Affairs

Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the leader of the Wadajir Party, has accused Qatar of interfering in Somalia’s domestic affairs.

Warsame expressed his displeasure on Twitter when he said, “Qatar has hurt Somalia enough. We now urge it to stop supporting the government’s pursuit of term extension.”

The opposition politician claims that the government of Qatar has been helping and encouraging the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to extend its term in office.

Somalia is scheduled to hold the first round of elections in late 2020 before proceeding with presidential polls in early 2021.

However, the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has said the country is unprepared for the elections.

Instead, NIEC recommends holding the elections in March 2021 and August 2021.

Warsame and other opposition leaders have said NIEC’s recommendations are nothing but the efforts by President Mohamed Farmaajo’s administration to extend its term.
