Opposition leaders in Somalia have urged President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo to attend next week’s elections talks in Garowe as a fellow presidential candidate.
The leaders issued a statement following the news that Farmaajo is pushing for resumption of talks between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS).
On February 10, Farmaajo announced that he would be pushing for a resumption of the talks that collapsed last week on Friday.
National Consultative Conference was held in Dhusamareb from February 1-5.
While commending Farmaajo for calling for fresh talks, the opposition presidential candidates reminded him that his term as the President of Somalia expired on February 8 at midnight.
Consequently, the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union advised him to attend the February 15 talks as a fellow presidential candidate.
In their view, Farmaajo would be treated as a former president who has no ambition of leading the country if he insists on chairing the Garowe summit.
