More than 20,000ha of land in Middle Shabelle is currently submerged under floodwater after intense rains caused the Shabelle River to burst its banks.
Consequently, on Wednesday, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that a humanitarian crisis is looking more likely to occur.
FAO identified the worst affected areas as Bal’ad and Jowhar districts in Middle Shabelle.
Further, the global organization mentioned other areas that are exposed to possible flooding, especially when River Shabelle and River Jubba burst their banks.
Some of the areas mentioned include Jowhar, Balcad, Mahadey Weyne, Beledweyne, and Afgooye districts.
FAO released a statement indicating that rains are expected to continue falling this week, which would then increase flooding along the riverine zones.
With 20,000ha currently under water, FAO predicts a bleak future for the region in the short term as floods continue to destroy farmland.
When that happens, FAO predicts that an already bad food situation would get worse, thus driving Somalia into deeper humanitarian crisis.
