The Somali parliament has approved bill that increases the number of female legislators by 30 percent.
However, the bill is at its early stages since the Lower House is yet to ratify it.
The news represents a huge boost to female politicians in the country who have struggled to make their voices heard in a predominantly patriarchal society.
During the early 2000s, women made up 8 percent of parliamentarians, which increased to 14 percent in 2012.
Today, the Upper House and Lower House are full of 80 female parliamentarians, a number that represents 25 percent of all Members of Parliament and Senators.
Activists now hope that the country would break the ceiling and push on to 30 percent quota, which would represent huge gains.
