Candidates interested in vying for the presidency in Somalia would now have to dig deeper into their pockets.
On April 18, a joint session of the House of the People (Lower House) and Senate (Upper House) decided to increase the registration fees for presidential candidates.
Henceforth, Somalis interested in vying for the presidency would have to part with $40,000 in registration fees.
Initially, presidential candidates had to pay $30,000.
Similarly, candidates interested in serving the Lower House or Upper House as Speakers would have to pay $20,000 in registration fees.
Those interested in the Deputy Speaker’s position would have to pay $15,000.
Previously, candidates vying for the Speaker’s seat would pay $15,000 while those going for the Deputy Speaker’s seat would part with $10,000.
