Parliament Passes Somali Agricultural Regulatory Inspection Services

Somalia’s House of Representatives passed the Somali Agricultural Regulatory Inspection Services (SARIS) on November 15.

Said Hussein Iid, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, announced this historic piece of legislation to the public on Sunday.

Iid said that SARIS would act as the competent authority that Somalis rely on for regulating agricultural activities around the country.

He listed some of the activities the authority would regulate as phytosanitary and the sale of agro-chemicals.

Furthermore, SARIS would be in charge of enacting regulatory standards governing the sale, production, storage and distribution of seeds.

Iid called the passage of the SARIS law a “landmark legislation.”
