MOGADISHU — The Speaker of the House of the People, H.E. Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), convened a high-level meeting with the Constitutional Review committees to receive the latest draft revisions, even as a growing bloc of legislators launched a motion to stall the process.
Joined by the leadership of both Parliamentary Houses, the committees officially submitted draft revisions for Chapters Five through Nine of the Constitution. They also presented a schedule for the upcoming debates regarding these proposed modifications.
Progress vs. Resistance
While leadership framed the session as a step toward expediting the review of the Provisional Constitution and ratifying a permanent document, political tensions surrounding the process are intensifying.
Simultaneously, members of parliament have begun gathering signatures for a motion aimed at preventing further amendments. Reported by sources close close to the HoP, the petition seeks to halt the constitutional overhaul, an initiative championed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, which has continued to provoke significant controversy.
The submission of the new chapters sets the stage for a potential showdown in the legislature, as the administration seeks to finalize the review process amidst an increasingly fractured political landscape.
