Parliament Speaker Forgives Kenya MPs for Traveling to Somalia Secretly

Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, has said that parliament will not punish the 11 Kenyan MPs who visited Somali secretly.

Upon arriving from Somali, Kenyan authorities held the MPs briefly at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. So far, the MPs have not been charged in court for any wrongdoing.

Citing Article 260 of the Standing Orders, Speaker Muturi says it does not indicate the punishment MPs deserve for flouting traveling rules.

While in Parliament, the Speaker said, “The Standing Orders say nothing about MPs who travel without informing me. However, MPs should abide by Chapter Six of the Constitution.”

He said this amidst the clamor for the Parliamentary Powers and Privilege Committee to interrogate the MPs on alleged misconduct and recommend appropriate action against them.
