Pastoralists from Central Somalia Rush to Towns for Survival

Pastoralists from central Somalia have rushed to towns for survival.

The migration has been taking place since early July when pastoralists ran away from areas such as Guriel.

Their primary reason for migrating to towns was to find fodder for their livestock.

Somalia has been experiencing one of its worst droughts in decades. The drought has created a humanitarian crisis.

However, the lack of water and food is also proving to be a major crisis for livestock.

The situation is direr in the rural parts of central Somalia. Pastoralists from these areas describe the situation as “impossible” for them and their livestock.

Those who have already arrived in the towns say that the water is much cheaper.

They also hailed the close proximity to livestock markets as a reason for making the move to the towns. This allows them to find buyers for their animals faster.
