Pastoralists Remain in Their Villages as New Dams are Launched in Somaliland

Several dams have been launched in Somaliland thus making it easier for pastoralists to get water for their livestock and crops.

One of the local pastoralists, Muhumed Qalinle Adan, could not hold back his delight at the turn of events. He says he no longer worries about traveling long distances to look for water.

Adan says that he normally walks hundreds of kilometers at least once a year in search of the precious commodity.

Last year, he had to stay away from his family for six months.

The pastoralist said that a significant number of his herd dies each year during the long treks because of lack of adequate water.

However, that is now about to change with the launch of the new dams, which are also likely to increase crop yields substantially.
