The International Organization for Peacebuilding (IOP) expressed great delight at reports that the Puntland Parliament had passed the Voter Registration Law unanimously.
Puntland Parliament passed the bill on February 4.
IOP, which is also known as Interpeace, called the move a “huge step that sets Puntland on the path to democratization.”
Further, the peacebuilding organization also indicated that the move provides the foundation for Local Government Elections (LGE).
While commending the unanimous approval of the bill, Interpeace expressed hope that it would “establish the base for LGEs across all Federal Member States (FMS).”
According to the organization, the new law now brings one-person-one-vote (1P1V) elections a step closer in Somalia.
The East African nation has been debating about the possibility of holding 1P1V (universal suffrage) elections from 2025.
