PM Barre Appoints Saalim Aliyow Ibrow as New Labor Minister

Mogadishu, Somalia – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has appointed veteran politician Saalim Aliyow Ibrow as Somalia’s new Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, marking a significant reshuffle within his cabinet. Ibrow takes over from Yusuf Mohamed Adan, who has led the ministry since October 21, 2024.

The appointment, announced in Mogadishu on Monday, brings one of Somalia’s most seasoned public officials back into the heart of government. Ibrow’s return is being viewed as a move to inject experience and stability into a ministry critical to social welfare, youth employment, and workers’ rights at a time when the country continues to rebuild its institutions.

Ibrow is no stranger to public service. Over the years, he has held several key cabinet portfolios, including higher education, defense, and transport. He also briefly served as acting Prime Minister, earning a reputation for his steady leadership and administrative skill during periods of political transition.

In his new role, Ibrow is expected to steer policies aimed at improving employment opportunities, enhancing labor protections, and strengthening Somalia’s social safety nets — a task made even more urgent by the country’s high youth unemployment and economic vulnerabilities.

Prime Minister Barre expressed confidence in his appointee’s ability to deliver tangible progress, emphasizing that the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs plays a pivotal role in promoting inclusivity and economic growth.

“Mr. Ibrow brings vast experience and dedication to public service. His leadership will be vital in advancing our government’s social and economic priorities,” the Prime Minister said in a brief statement.

The outgoing minister, Yusuf Mohamed Adan, was credited for initiating reforms to modernize labor systems and expand social protection programs during his year-long tenure. His departure comes amid broader government efforts to realign ministerial leadership with the administration’s evolving priorities.

For many observers, Ibrow’s appointment signals Prime Minister Barre’s continued focus on experience-driven governance as Somalia pushes ahead with institutional reforms, job creation, and national development.
