PM Barre Criticizes Jubbaland Leader Over “Illegal Unilateral Elections”

Mogadishu, Somalia – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has publicly criticized Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” for violating the agreements of the National Consultative Council (NCC) by organizing what he described as “illegal unilateral elections” in the region.

Speaking just days after Ahmed Madobe failed to attend the recent NCC summit in Mogadishu, the Prime Minister said, “Jubbaland is a different ball game,” signaling growing tensions between the federal government and the regional administration.

According to the Prime Minister, Madobe’s actions constitute a breach of the federal pact signed by leaders of the Federal Member States and the central government. “The NCC agreements are binding on all parties. No one is above the law,” PM Hamza emphasized.

In response to the unfolding political impasse, the Ministry of Interior has been instructed to submit proposals in line with the federal constitution to address the situation and ensure electoral processes across the country are unified and lawful.

The dispute marks a significant rift within Somalia’s fragile federal system, potentially complicating upcoming national reconciliation and electoral timelines.

Political analysts warn that continued unilateral actions by regional leaders could undermine national stability and efforts to hold credible, inclusive elections.

The federal government has not yet indicated what specific measures it may take against the Jubbaland administration, but the Prime Minister’s remarks underscore a more assertive stance toward enforcing the terms of intergovernmental agreements.
