PM Dismisses Need to Reply to Trump’s Anti-Somali Statements

Mogadishu, Somalia -The Somalia Prime Minister on Wednesday defended his government’s choice to remain silent amid recent provocative statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has intensified criticism of Somali immigrants in the United States.

Speaking at the Sixth Youth Leadership and Innovation Summit 2025, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre stated that Mogadishu wants no part in escalating Trump’s comments into a political clash that might amplify his words.

“It is easier to ignore President Trump than to respond and give meaning to his statements. Trump did not insult Somalia alone; he has made negative remarks about many countries, including Nigeria and South Africa. It is not something we consider worth making an issue of,” he said.

President Trump’s increasingly hostile rhetoric has raised concerns among Somali communities in the U.S., who argue that the President’s renewed attacks foster fear and uncertainty.

PM Barre’s comments followed hours after Trump again made derogatory remarks against Somali Americans, labeling them as “garbage” unfit for the United States.
