Following weeks of increasing tensions between Kenya and Somalia, President Farmaajo plans to visit President Uhuru Kenyatta to resolve the disputes that threaten security in the region.
His office says he has “accepted” an invitation to visit Kenya’s capital for a meeting with the top leaders of his country’s East Africa neighbor.
The tensions between the two Horn of Africa nations came to a head last week when Somali National Army battled forces loyal to Abdirashid Janan, a fugitive Jubaland Minister.
Kenya feels that President Farmaajo’s attempts to create a parallel administration in Somali’s Gedo region could undermine and antagonize regional states, thus worsening insecurity.
Farmaajo’s decision to accept the Kenyan invitation follows a meeting with Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Fred Matiang’i in Mogadishu on Sunday.
Matiang’i was in Somalia with the blessings of President Uhuru to resolve the underlying issues between the two nations.
During the meeting, his delegation welcomed Farmaajo to visit Nairobi soon and the Somali leader “gladly” accepted.
