Mogadishu, Somalia – President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, officially closed the Second National Identity Conference (SNIDC2025) in Mogadishu on Tuesday, highlighting the advancements in developing the nation’s unified digital identity system. The two-day event attracted government bodies, specialists, and residents to evaluate accomplishments and future steps for rolling out the National ID.
The President praised the efforts of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Somali citizens who have registered, and technical specialists contributing to Somalia’s digital identity framework.
President Mohamud stressed that the conference reflects the Federal Government’s firm dedication to creating a modern, secure, unified National ID system, essential for state-building, national security, and public service provision. He highlighted the importance of matching national systems to international standards as Somalia moves toward completing its constitution and achieving universal suffrage.
“To prove you are a Somali citizen starts with obtaining the National ID card,” the President stated.
“It is now easy to acquire, and the time will come when life will not function without it. Let us embrace modern systems; our nation cannot remain where it was 35 years ago. We must uphold international norms and live like the rest of the world,” he added.
The President called on all government institutions to collaborate in applying the conference recommendations, emphasizing the need for every Somali citizen to obtain the National ID. He pointed out that broad registration will bolster public confidence in state bodies and enhance national cohesion.
