President Mohamud Urges Calm, Orders Troop Return After Gedo Clashes

Mogadishu – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has extended his condolences to victims of recent clashes in the Gedo region, calling for urgent humanitarian aid and long-term recovery efforts to support affected communities.

In a statement issued by Villa Somalia on Tuesday evening, the President instructed that national forces currently relocated to Kenyan territory be returned to their respective areas. He assured the troops of their safety and stressed that no one would face punishment upon their return.

Without naming specific actors, President Mohamud appealed to “all parties involved in regional conflicts to work towards peace, unity, and stability across the country,” underlining his administration’s commitment to fostering reconciliation in conflict-affected areas.

The Gedo region, located in southern Somalia along the Kenya border, has seen periodic flare-ups of violence linked to territorial disputes, political tensions, and cross-border dynamics. Humanitarian agencies have warned that the latest unrest could worsen the plight of civilians already struggling with displacement and food insecurity.

President Mohamud’s call for calm comes amid heightened regional sensitivities, with his directive on troop movements seen as a bid to reduce friction and de-escalate tensions along the Kenya–Somalia frontier.
