Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has made a compelling call for all Somali citizens to register for the National ID, emphasizing that the digital identity system serves as a vital foundation for Somalia’s future governance, security, and service provision.
Concluding the Second National Identity Conference (SNIDC2025) in Mogadishu on Tuesday, the President stated that the National ID is no longer optional but a core prerequisite for citizenship rights and national advancement.
He commended NIRA’s efforts and the rising number of citizens who have registered, while stressing that the next stage demands full participation from the public.
“To prove you are a Somali citizen begins with obtaining the National ID card,” President Mohamud said.
“The time is coming when life will not function without it. Our nation cannot remain where it was 35 years ago; we must embrace modern systems and live like the rest of the world,” added the President.
He called on Somalis in the cities, rural areas, and the diaspora to register without delay, noting that the National ID will enable access to government services, secure elections, and protect every citizen’s rights.
He also urged government institutions to speed up outreach and ensure registration reaches all, particularly vulnerable and remote communities.
The President affirmed that a unified National ID system will build trust between citizens and the state, bolster national security, and advance Somalia’s path to democratic governance.
