MOGADISHU – On Tuesday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Government of Somalia formally enacted legislation creating the Independent National Human Rights Commission, following ratification by both chambers of the federal parliament.
President Mohamud stated that the establishment of the commission demonstrates Somalia’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its people.
He praised the collaborative relationship between Parliament and the federal government, emphasizing that their combined efforts were crucial in developing legislation that aligns with constitutional and religious principles.
The President also recognized the Ministry of Family and Human Rights for spearheading the legal and technical preparations that enabled the creation of a commission equipped to address national responsibilities effectively.
President Mohamud wished the commission members success as they commence their duties and reminded them of the significant responsibilities ahead that include protecting human rights and reinforcing governance founded on justice, accountability, and transparency.
The presidential signing coincided with Somalia’s observance of Human Rights Day, representing a substantial milestone for the country as it pursues progress in human rights protections and institutional advancement.
