Tangier, Morocco – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has called on African and Global South nations to pursue innovative forms of economic and technological collaboration, including an Africa-led maritime alliance and a dedicated investment fund for developing countries.
Speaking at the opening of the MEDays International Forum, PM Barre stated that a continent-led Maritime Alliance connecting African states with Atlantic nations would secure vital sea routes and enhance trade flows.
He also advocated for a direct maritime trade corridor between East Africa and Morocco, describing it as a strategic measure to foster deeper integration between the continent’s eastern and northern economies.
Barre encouraged Global South governments to support a “Global South Investment Fund” to fund infrastructure and development projects without the limitations commonly tied to traditional lending.
Such an initiative, he explained, would enable developing nations to establish their own priorities and diminish dependence on external financing requirements.
On technology, the Somali leader proposed establishing an Artificial Intelligence Forum for the Global South. He argued that emerging AI systems should incorporate the languages, cultures, and interests of southern nations to prevent exacerbating global digital disparities.
Barre, joined by Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, is among the prominent leaders at the MEDays Forum, which has attracted policymakers and international figures to examine global economic and geopolitical transformations.
The Prime Minister plans to conduct bilateral meetings on the forum’s sidelines to further Somalia’s diplomatic and economic goals and cultivate new partnerships.
