Prime Minister Khaire Recommends Solution for Reunifying Somalia and Somaliland

Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has suggested a new solution for reunifying Somalia and Somaliland.

As part of his solution, PM Khaire recommends giving Somaliland the Presidency in the upcoming elections.

Additionally, Khaire also suggests transferring the country’s capital from Mogadishu to Somaliland.

His suggestions are part of the efforts leaders in Mogadishu are spearheading to reunify the two nations that went their separate ways in 1991.

Somaliland joined Somalia in 1960 just after the two nations got their independence from Great Britain and Italy respectively.

However, Somaliland broke free from Somalia in 1991 when the country disintegrated during the infamous civil war following President Siad Barre’s ouster from power in a military coup.

Since then, the two nations have been at loggerheads.

In June, the leaders of the two nations met in Djibouti at the invitation of President Ismail Omar Guelleh. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia also attended the Djibouti talks.

The leaders then appointed a technical committee to resolve all the contentious issues that need discussing before reunification becomes a reality.
