Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has pledged to support the fight for media freedom in Somalia.
Roble made this announcement on Monday, October 26, during his meeting with representatives of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ).
A delegation of officers from FESOJ, led by Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, the Secretary General of the group, paid him a courtesy call at his office in Mogadishu.
Moalimuu published a statement on his Facebook page confirming Roble’s vows.
In the statement, Moalimuu said, “Prime Minister Roble reiterated his belief that the media has a greater responsibility in reporting facts independently.”
His statement also said that the Prime Minister identifies with the grievances and challenges that members of the press face in the East African nation.
For years, Somali journalists have endured arrests, intimidations, and abuse from government employees.
Prime Minister Roble promised the FESOJ delegation that his “government would seek to address the allegations of arrests and abuse” to guarantee freedom of expression.
