The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has banned all public gatherings amid a reported surge in COVID-19 cases.
In the last week, Somalia has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases around the country.
Consequently, the government has prohibited all public gatherings.
FGS made this announcement on February 17 through Osman Dubbe, the Minister of Information.
Dubbe made the announcement alongside Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur, the Minister of Health.
The Ministry of Security was represented at the press conference that was issued on Wednesday as COVID-19 cases grew significantly.
Further, all institutions of learning were ordered closed.
Students in schools and universities around the East African nation were immediately required to return home.
Non-essential government workers have also been directed to work from home, as FGS looks to stem the worsening situation.
On Tuesday, Dr. Nur informed the public that a second wave of COVID-19 infections had hit Somalia.
