Puntland Celebrates 23rd Anniversary of Existence as a Federal Member State

Puntland recently celebrated the 23rd anniversary of its existence as one of Somalia’s Federal Member States (FGS).

The regional state is the oldest of all FMS members.

Having been born in 1998, Puntland has become the epitome of what federalism is all about in this East African nation.

Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed served as its founding president from 1998-2004. One of its most beloved leaders was Abdirahman Farole, who served as president between 2009 and 2014.

Under Said Abdullahi Deni, its current President, Puntland has become a champion of federalism.

It never shies away from confrontations with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) on governance issues.
