Puntland Legislators Approve Controversial Amendments to the Region’s Constitution

Puntland legislators have approved controversial amendments to the region’s constitution.

They overwhelmingly passed the motion that introduced a raft of changes to the constitution on Tuesday morning.

Fifty-four legislators out of the 60 who were present at today’s session at the regional parliament passed the amendments.

The regional parliament has 66 Members of Parliament (MPs).

There have been fears that President Said Abdullahi Deni intends to extend his term in office through the amendments.

Opposition parties called for postponement of the amendments until after the presidential elections due for January 2024.
