Puntland Parliament Rejects Appointment of New Judges to Supreme Court

Puntland’s regional parliament voted to reject the appointment of new judges to join the Supreme Court.

President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland state had named a set of new judges he wanted to join the Supreme Court.

He had also expressed interest to appoint a new Chairman of the Supreme Court to replace Ahmed Yousuf Taran.

However, the regional parliamentarians rejected President Deni’s preferred candidates.

Parliamentary records show that 23 of the legislators voted to reject the list of the new judges while 11 were in favor.

Nine parliamentarians abstained from the Monday, July 4 vote.
