Puntland, one of the semi-autonomous regions in Somalia and a member of the Federal Member States (FMS), has reported its first COVID-19 death.
Authorities reported the death on Friday at a time when the whole country is facing unprecedented number of infections.
Out of 11 positively confirmed cases, Puntland now has one death. Authorities announced that the death occurred in Galdogob District, Mudug Region.
Authorities announced that the deceased had been diagnosed with the virulent disease several weeks ago. However, his condition worsened before he finally succumbed to the disease.
His death comes in the wake of several measures that the government of President Said Abdullahi Deni had put in place to curb the spread of the disease in the region.
Such measures include imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew, enforcing social distancing, and placing a ban on all mass public gatherings.
Further, the state had banned all domestic flights in Garowe while suspending school learning activities.
