Mogadishu – Somalia’s selection process for the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has come under sharp criticism from the Somali Women Journalists Organisation (SWJO), which has described it as “corrupt and opaque.”
The rights organization alleges that political interference and favoritism heavily influenced the appointments, while transparency was severely lacking.
These concerns raise serious questions about the credibility and effectiveness of the NHRC, which is tasked with upholding human rights across Somalia.
SWJO warns that such compromised procedures could undermine public trust in the commission and weaken its ability to perform its critical role.
Calls are growing for a more transparent and accountable selection process to ensure the NHRC can operate independently and effectively in defending human rights in Somalia.
