River Shabelle Floods to Leave Somali Livestock Farmers Stranded

The recent floods in River Shabelle have left the country’s horde of livestock farmers and herders stranded.

As heavy rainfalls continue pounding the country, pastoralists have been left stranded together with their livestock in the southern parts of Somalia.

Consequently, most of these farmers and herders have been forced to use boats to transport their cattle, sheep, and goats to safer grounds.

One of the herders, Ahmed Hussein, said he was now compelled to buy rice chaff to feed his livestock. A bag of the rice chaff now costs $12 since most of the grassland is now under water.

Hussein says the flooding has made many places impassable thus causing the many animals being transported to the market for selling to drown.

The pastoralists say flooding has made it impossible to feed their animals, find markets for their livestock, and transport their animals to the market to sell.
