Ruto Urges International Community to Rethink ATMIS Withdrawal from Somalia

Kenyan President William Ruto called on the international community to rethink the impending withdrawal of African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) from Somalia.

President Ruto made this call over the weekend.

Specifically, he addressed the United States saying that it needs to intervene fast and prevent the looming complete withdrawal by ATMIS forces.

ATMIS forces will no longer be in Somalia from December 31, 2024.

The Kenyan President said that he had already discussed the matter with his Somali counterpart President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud earlier this year.

Ruto added that he never reached any consensus with his Somali counterpart on the matter.

In his view, Kenya will bear much of the task of keeping the region secure once ATMIS leaves Somalia. Such increased roles could stretch Kenya’s security capabilities to the maximum.
