The Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
The UN Security Council (UNSC) announced the extension on Thursday, May 26.
Consequently, UNSOM would continue operating in the East African nation until October 31, 2022.
The extension by five months allows UNSOM more time to achieve its targets.
Moreover, the UNSC determined that this would not be the right time to interfere with UNSOM’s mandate just when Somalia is under a new administration.
