Security Forces in Deadly Gunfight with Extremists in Mogadishu

At least three people died when security forces in Mogadishu were caught up in a deadly gunfight with extremists on November 1.

According to multiple sources, the incident occurred when the militants attacked a group of intelligence officers in Somalia’s capital city.

Captain Hassan Ahmed, a senior official with the Somali Police Force (SPF), confirmed that a few extremists on motorbikes attacked the intelligence officers on Sunday.

The incident took place just before dawn as the intelligence officers were guarding surveillance cameras along Dabka Junction in Mogadishu.

Captain Ahmed confirmed that two intelligence officers working undercover for National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) were killed in the pre-dawn attack.

One of the militants was also killed in the incident.

Ahmed stated that four other individuals were injured in the deadly attack before being rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Recently, Al-Shabaab militants seem to be targeting newly installed surveillance cameras in the nation’s capital.

On the morning of January 29, 2020, they also destroyed four CCTV cameras in Mogadishu.

NISA installed CCTV cameras in the area in December 2019 as a crime-deterrent measure.

The spy agency also hoped to use the CCTV cameras to deter Al-Shabaab from carrying out attacks in the region.
