The Upper House will have the final say on whether Banadir region receives the 13 seats it has fought for in the upcoming polls, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has said.
President Farmaajo made this announcement on Saturday night during a panel discussion touching on several issues.
Raas Institute hosted the panel discussion.
Farmaajo admitted that he had led the push for increased representation for Banadir region but the issue was now out of his hands.
He clarified that the House of Representatives had already accepted the appeal from Banadir’s leadership for increased representation in parliament.
“The issue is now past the political stage and has moved into the Senate where it would be handled specifically based on the dictates of the law,” said Farmaajo.
Banadir’s push for more representation has divided politicians around the country with those opposed to it saying that the issue is neither important nor urgent.
