Senator Abshir Warns Farmaajo over Plans to Extend Term in Office

Senator Abshir Ahmed, who also serves as the Deputy Speaker in the Senate, has warned President Mohamed Farmaajo’s administration against extending its term in office.

Senator Abshir has warned Farmaajo that such plans would be directly contravening the country’s nascent constitution.

He reminded leaders in Somalia that the constitution has spelt out the duration that each constitutional body should last.

The current administration’s term is expected to elapse in November 2020.

Consequently, the country should be holding national elections in November 2020 followed by presidential polls in February 2021.

Senator Abshir reminded Somalis that Articles 60 and 91 of the constitution declare that the President and Members of Parliament can only remain in office for four years.

The House of Representatives has started entertaining thoughts of extending their term in office.

Senator Abshir says the Upper House (Senate) would have no qualms about invalidating such proposals should they pass through the Lower House.
