Senator Ilyas Ali Hassan has called for increased public awareness of Islamic values as the solution for stopping the growing cases of sexual crimes in the country.
Ilyas made this call following the shocking rape and murder of a 19-year old girl in Mogadishu’s Waberi district on Friday last week.
He condemned the gruesome rape and killing of young girls and boys in Somalia as not only “unacceptable but also shameful” act.
Further, Senator Ilyas called the incidents “heinous and against Islamic law.
“The incidents are heinous. They go against Islamic teaching while failing to adhere to basic human rights laws,” the Senator said.
Consequently, he has urged authorities and the elderly to intensify public awareness of Islamic values as a solution against the increasing cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
Senator Ilyas urged security authorities to step in by preventing and arresting those involved in such despicable acts too.
