A senior Commander with the Somali National Army (SNA) was injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack by Al-Shabaab militants in Gedo region.
Reports indicate that the commander was part of a group of military officers carrying out a covert operation against militants in the region.
Military personnel carried out the operation on January 13.
The injured senior commander was identified as Major Mohamed Dhere.
Maj. Dhere led the SNA personnel in launching a covert operation to smoke out members of the militant group in Korey, Gedo.
According to multiple sources, Maj. Dhere remains in critical condition in hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
In recent times, the region has come under intense and regular attacks from the extremists.
Many of these attacks have been quite deadly.
In Wednesday’s attack, three other soldiers were injured. The injured were also rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
