Kenyan authorities are shocked that blood donated by Kenyans is being sold in Somalia. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are investigating officials from Kenya National Blood Transfusion Center (KNBTS) for allegedly being part of the cartel selling blood.
Last week on Wednesday, DCI officers announced that it had commenced investigations to find out how this has happened. The organization has focused its attention on KNBTS officials. It says the officials created an artificial shortage of blood in the country.
Later, they took all the blood Kenyans donated to Somalia and sold it illegally.
Blood from Kenya is in high demand in Somalia because it is properly screened. It fetches good prices from individuals and health facilities around the country. As this happens, Kenyan hospitals are unable to cater for patients who need blood transfusion.
Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe, says he has received the information. He termed those reports as “unfortunate.” CS Kagwe was unable to divulge more information saying that DCI was carrying out detailed investigations to get to the root of the problem.
