SJS Journalists Seek Germany Assistance in Protecting Freedom of Expression

The leadership and membership of the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) seek the intervention of Germany in protecting their freedoms.

On February 11, a delegation from SJS held discussions with officials from the German Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The SJS team expressed pleasure at the opportunity it received to attend the discussions with the German officials.

They insisted that a democratic society cannot emerge in a country that neither guarantees nor protects fundamental human rights, such as freedom of expression.

Somali journalists are a highly frustrated and persecuted lot.

They endure constant intimidation, harassment, arrest, detention, beatings, and even deaths from authorities.
