General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh has announced plans to register all weapons and ammunition in Somalia.
Gen. Rageh, who is the Chief of the Somali National Army (SNA), made this announcement on March 21.
He was speaking during a conference organized in Mogadishu.
Participants at the conference are discussing arms control in Somalia.
The East African nation has been grappling with a proliferation of arms, which are often in the hands of criminals and extremists.
Gen. Rageh said that the government is making plans to ensure all arms are registered.
That way, the arms would never fall into the wrong hands.
“The government is aware of the dangers posed by unregistered weapons,” Gen. Rageh said.
“Therefore, SNA is working closely with other arms of the government and international partners to develop procedures for controlling weapons and ammunition,” he added.
Rageh mentioned that the procedures for registering weapons have already passed through the Council of Cabinet.
