The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has deployed several soldiers to Beledweyne to deal with the tensions that have been rising since the region conducted elections in 2019.
On the morning of January 9, two planes arrived at a local airport in Beledweyne.
Aboard the planes were tens of Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers, including those belonging to the Harma’ad unit.
Harma’ad soldiers comprise an elite unit that was trained in Turkey.
According to sources, the soldiers will be distributed in various parts of the restive city to calm the situation and ensure that unrests and protests do not take place again.
FGS deployed the soldiers into the region a day after Ali Guudlawe, the President of HirShabelle elected into office in November 2020, traveled to Mogadishu for meetings.
Guudlawe held talks with President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
It is worth noting that President Farmaajo backed Guudlawe’s candidature in last year’s elections. Protestors have been on the streets to voice their concerns over this outcome.
